Rapid Reaction: Bears Lose 11-5 on Opening Day

The Newark Bears opened up the 2011 Can-Am League regular season at home against Rockland Boulders on Thursday morning.

Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium was PACKED with students from nearby schools, who were given free tickets in honor of the "Lets Move!" event.

Like the Bears' season opener last year, the game was forced to go into extra innings -- only this time Newark wasn't able to come out on top. In the tenth inning, reliever Anthony Pluta, who started Sunday's exhibition game against Hank's Yanks, surrendered 6 runs to the Boulders.

Much more on the game later tonight.

  1. They had a very nice crowd until the school kids had to leave… then it seemed like it was just a handful of fans and families of the dance team members & players who stuck around to see the end.

It was a fun game (at least until the top of the 10th inning). I’ll try to catch some of the internet broadcast of tomorrow’s game & I expect to get back to Newark this weekend.

  2. Yes I was surprised by the large turnout. The parking deck, which usually has tons of spaces was nearly full and the stands were packed. They said something like they gave out tickets to nearly 3000 school kids so if you subtract that youre looking at an announced figure of somewhere between 900-1000 paid.

The team seems like theyre really trying this year to get things on the right track. I didn’t know what to think of the dance team when I first heard about it, but they weren’t overly intrusive and were pretty entertaining in their brief showings (a lot better than the same two tickets to a future Bears game contest from last year).

I’m going to try to go tomorrow since after this weekend I’m probably going to be too tied up with work to go for a while. It should be interesting to see what kind of attendance that game draws.

  3. I felt bad for the dancers today. They were supposed to do a number before the game, but the speeches ran long. They got to do it afterwards, but the stadium was empty by then.

Tomorrow’s crowd will probably just be whatever school kids are invited. I’m more interested in the weekend crowds – if they draw on a holiday weekend when a lot of people are away, I’ll be impressed.
