Daryle Ward Named Pointstreak Can-Am League Batter of the Week
Today it was announced that Newark Bears first baseman Daryle Ward earned the Pointstreak Can-Am League Batter of the Week honors. During the past week, the slugging first baseman hit .320 and clubbed four home runs with 13 RBI. Currently, the former big leaguer is tied for fourth place on the Can-Am League RBI Leaders with teammate Danny Santiesteban.
On Sunday afternoon against Worcester, he picked up right where he left of with a grand slam in the first inning.
Unfortunately, Ward's hot streak has not translated into wins lately, as the team has currently dropped their past four game in a row. The Bears take the field tomorrow night at 5:35 p.m. in Game 3 against the Worcester Tornadoes.

After splitting the series with Quebec, the Newark Bears looked to win the rubber game Saturday on Fireworks night. There were certainly fireworks, as the game turned out to be a bit of a nail-biter. The Bears held a 3-2 lead for much of the game thanks to two home runs from right-fielder Danny Santiesteban. In the eighth inning though the lead disappeared after reliever T.J. Hose surrendered three runs to give Quebec a 5-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bears tried to come back after a towering solo home run from first baseman Daryle Ward. In the ninth inning, catcher Billy Alvino tried to get another rally started with a single. Unfortunately, shortstop Juan Martinez was unable to drive him in and was retired for the final out of the game. Nevertheless, the fans went home happy after a post-game fireworks show to cap off the evening.
The Bears begin a new series tomorrow afternoon at the Den when they face the Worcester Tornadoes. Those with ticket stubs from Saturday's game (July 16) will be able to get free admission to Sunday's contest by presenting them at the ticket window. Pretty cool move...hopefully it translates into more seats being filled on Sunday.
Also of note, Bears PA announcer John Patterson reminded fans that Saturday also happened to be the 12th anniversary of Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Flickr photo galleries of both Friday and Saturday's games will be posted at some point over the next week. Until then, enjoy video footage as the Bears attempted to rally back against the first place Quebec Capitales. Photos: Pittsfield Colonials at Newark Bears (June 29, 2011)
The Newark Bears did battle with the Pittsfield Colonials (formerly the Nashua Pride franchise) on a beautiful Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark last week.
Casey Gaynor took the ball for the Bears, in only his second start of the season for the team. He gave up five runs in five innings of work. Patrick Moran took the mound for the opposing Colonials and similarly gave up five runs in 5.2 innings of work. The game was left in the hands of the bullpen. T.J. Hose held the Colonials off of the board for two innings before handing the ball over to reliever Chris Rollins, who gave up three runs en route to a 9-5 Bears loss.
Offensively, Eric McGee led the charge for the Bears, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brandon Young, Danny Santiesteban and Billy Alvino all had multi-hit games as well.
