Video Highlight: Santiesteban Singles In Newark Exhibition Game

Check out a video highlight from yesterday's Bears game against Hank's Yanks featuring Newark Outfielder Danny Santiesteban getting a base hit single:

Danny Santiesteban is no stranger to Newark, as he played with the team back in 2009 although back then he was primarily used as a pitcher. In 12 games, as a reliever, Santiesteban posted a 2-1 record with a 6.00 ERA.

Last season, he split time both in the outfielder and on the mound for the Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League. As a hitter, Santiesteban showed some pop with 14 long balls and 42 RBI to compliment a .246 batting average. On the mound he posted a 4.08 ERA in 12 relief appearances. If he can find a way to make more contact I think Santiesteban could find himself slotted in the middle of the batting order.

Overall, it looks like Newark has found their jack-of-all trades in Danny Santiesteban, who could become quite valuable to the team down the stretch, especially if injuries arise. It also didn't hurt that he seemed to hit it off with the fans from right out of the box.

As Paul over at Random Baseball Stuff points out, Newark inked three players to contracts with just a little over a week remaining prior to Opening Day. Among the signees are pitchers Andy Yawger and Michael Mastrogiovanni; as well as catcher Patrick Reardon.

One interesting note is that the Bears have signed, released and re-signed pitcher Andy Yawger all in the span of one off-season according to the Can-Am League Transaction Wire. Kind of strange, but that's minor league baseball for you.

Paul has all the details and breaks down each player here and shows what each is likely to bring to the table this season.

Twitterverse: Posada Situation Sinking His Yankees Legacy

With news that he opted out of Saturday's game Jorge Posada's Yankees legacy is quickly becoming a sinking ship. Credit: Phil Hoops

The press conference didn't even happen yet and it was clear that the relationship between Jorge Posada and the New York Yankees was damaged, perhaps beyond repair. I know you're probably thinking this isn't a Yankees blog and you're right we normally don't pick up too many New York Yankees news tidbits around here but when a cornerstone player for over a decade ...that's a game changer.

Last night began innocently enough, with Posada being a late scratch from the team's contest against the Boston Red Sox after he was slated to bat ninth in the batting order for the first time in over a decade. However, soon it became very clear that there was more to this story with Yankees General Manager telling reporters that the 39 year-old switch hitting catcher wanted out of the lineup due to being insulted by his position in the batting order (the number nine hole).

From there the truth became a bit more clouded. First Posada's father told YES Network correspondent and former New York Times journalist Jack Curry that his son made a mistake and should have played in the ball game. Jorge's wife Laura, on the other hand, maintained that her husband could not to play due to stiffness in his back. The truth...well the truth really doesn't even matter at this point. The relationship between one of sports arguably most well-known and respected teams and their long-time backstop is in peril.

What should the Yankees do? Frankly, I feel as if the team should punish Posada to the greatest extent possible. Why? Because they need to take a stand and protect the integrity of the organization. You can't let guys ask out of the lineup to make a statement regardless of their seniority and their popularity with the fan base.

Going back to the hitting ninth in the lineup argument, I have to say that I think it's probably the best spot for the veteran. This isn't just a prolonged slump we're talking about with Posada this season. The team is nearly one quarter of the way through the regular season and Posada is hitting .165 as the team's primary designated hitter. That's not just bad...it's atrocious for a guy who is making in excess of $13 million this season.

If I were in Posada's position I'd be in the lineup even if I were batting tenth in the order, but then again they're not paying me millions to go out there and play. Just my two cents of course.

Bears Sign Trio of Players

The Newark Bears' front office was busy yesterday, as the team announced the signings of three new players, who could all very well be in uniform in a little over two weeks when the Bears open up at home against the Rockland Boulders. Without further adieu, meet the newest members of the Newark Bears:

Alex Smith

26 year-old left-hander Alex Smith has pitched nearly exclusively out of the bullpen throughout his baseball career, including his time with the University of Virginia in which he served as the team's setup man. Smith's professional career began in 2009 with the now-defunct Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am League. Last season, Smith split time between the Frontier and Northern Independent Leagues and amassed an ERA of 5.71. Look for Smith to compete for a spot in Newark's bullpen this season as either a middle reliever or a setup man.

Not much information is available about left-hander Victor Gonzalez. The 22 year-old 5'8" pitcher last pitched for the Brewton-Parker College Barons in Mount Vernon, Georgia. When, Gonzalez takes the mound for the Bears for the first time, it will mark the professional debut for the Jackson Heights, New York native. You'd have to imagine that Gonzalez could end up in direct competition with fellow newcomer Alex Smith for a coveted spot in the bullpen. Check out the video above to view one of Gonzalez's bullpen sessions.

Catcher Billy Alvino warms up. Credit: Chuck Welch / Lakeland Local

Last but not least, Newark picked up a third catcher, Billy Alvino, to compete with Matt Klimas and Eric McGee for the starting job [I wonder whatever happened to Arthur Barone, whom the team had re-signed earlier in the off-season?]. Alvino comes to the Bears after spending his entire 3 year professional career in the Detroit Tigers organization. His offense numbers aren't earth-shattering with a career average of .228 in 230 plate appearances, but he brings to the table solid defense, which definitely helps his cause. To learn more about Alvino, a Stony Brook native, check out an in-depth feature that was done on him last year by Patch.com.
